Laredo Western Club at the Royal Gunpowder Mills 2016 Annual Westwern Theme Weekend
This year Laredo members and guests have put together a 'travelling' railroad encampment. During the great rush to cross the vast wilderness of the American plains, railroad business men invested not only vast amounts of cash but personal reputations on getting from the rich East Coast Atlantic to the newly discovered opportunities of the Western Pacific sea board, and cashing in on all the riches in between. Entrepreneurs and the Railway Workers put up temporary encampments following the rout of the railroads. The Texas Railroad Commission had been given licence to build a 360 mile section from Franklin on the New Mexico/Texas border, travelling alongside Rio Pecos to Horse Head Crossing Texas. The construction started late 1891 but throughout the project Mexican bandits and raiders set their sights on the rich pickings to be had all along the construction sites. Laredo members Re-enact one of these many conflicts much to the delight of the appetitive audiences that attended our Western Weekend.
